The Damara Journals - Chapter 5

Having spent most of the day resting, conversation in the cave turns to the three bandits that were captured.

Knowing that it’s unlikely the party will get back to Ashdale before dark, Larix and Hadron discuss whether or not they should question the prisoners themselves. Hadron believing that it has nothing to do with them, and knowing they were only hired to capture the bandits, doesn’t see the point, whilst Larix thinks that any information is useful. Eventually, with all party members having had their say, it’s decided that Larix will question the bandits.

Taking them out into the clearing, Larix ties two of the prisoners to a tree, before blindfolding and gagging them. Taking the more frightened prisoner, he binds him to a tree across the clearing, without gag or blindfold, leaving him free to talk, and begins questioning him about what they’re doing in the area and why they’re burning fields. The bandit refuses to talk, so Larix walks over to one of the other prisoners, producing a dagger as he does so. Turning the weapon he places the tip of the hilt against the foot of one of the blind-folded bandits, preparing to use it to break the bones. Larix turns to the lone bandit. “You can stop this” he says. “I don’t have to do this. I only want information.” But the bandit turns away, ignoring him.

With the orcs defeated & Hadron’s wounds healed, the party take the initiative & head for the bandit’s cave.

With Ilvendor, Bøðvarr and Elandriel all searching, the group eventually find tracks of the bandits, and follow them back to a small hollow. Peering into the clearing, the group see a small cave, surrounded by boulders, with the faint flickering of a fire coming from within. Agreeing that surprise is their best plan of action, the party attempt to sneak around the edge of the clearing.

The bandits, alerted to the groups’ presence, put out their fire, giving them the cover of the caves dark interior.

Rushing back to in the inn, Elandriel informs the rest of the party about the fire on the horizon. Deciding that investigation is the best plan of action, the group gather their equipment & head for the town gates, only to find them locked & guarded.

Unable to convince the gatemen to let them out, and seeing that most of the militia men are gathered on the wall in sight of the fire, Elandriel quickly leads the party to an unguarded section of wall, and people begin climbing over.

Outside the palisade, the fields are quiet & the few burning torches give little light, as the party make their way quickly across the landscape. Although the party gives the village a wide berth, the sharp-eared Ilvendor hears a cry go up from the village, as the watchmen spot the groups torches, however there is no sound or sign of any pursuit.

As the group sit in his chambers, the old priest looks frail and drawn in his voluminous robes.   Sitting back in a chair, the old mans eyes light up, and his previously cracked, quiet voice, takes on a deep and melodious tone.

"So, another group of travellers, come to ask about Marakeer, eh?"  he asks, raising a bushy eyebrow.  "The man was great, perhaps even greater than he knew, but such are the ways with ...."

The group sat in the Goblin’s Blade in Tinderdale, discussing the events of the previous days. Should they stick together? There was no obligation for anybody to stay, as the job had been done and Captain Hardwick was more than happy with the results.

Zambar, feeling more boisterous, started playing tricks on one of the other patrons, a man of indeterminate age and non-descript features, sitting alone at one end of the bar.

The inn-keeper, knowing of Zambars abilities and having dealt with him before, quickly recognised the signs, as the man turned as if spoken to & batted at un-seen insects. Moments later, Zambar was forcibly ejected from the inn.

I'm back from my honeymoon & have the next chapter ready to be typed up & posted.  Sorry for the delay - should be up before the end of the weekend (I hope).  Am hoping that the rest will go up weekly, until the blog catch's up with the game.

Captain Hardwick sat before the group.

“I know you don’t know each other, but I know all of you.  I have a little job that I’d like you to undertake.”

Welcome, stranger.

These are not my journals, but the journals of my fore-fathers and their adventures in the frozen north.  I have decided to re-write them, as the parchment is now yellow with age, and the pen-strokes are becoming more illegible through the watermarks and bloodstains.  I long time has passed since they were written, and I doubt that any one else remembers the sacrifices that they made, or how close the world came to ....
